Connector terminology:
â— Alloy: A combination of two or more metals.
â— Contact: An electrically conductive part of a connecting member designed to provide electrical contact or separate contacts (position).
â— Contact area: A contact surface that makes electrical connections to IC leads or contacts.
â— Contact aesistance: The resistance at the connection location is determined by the shape of the terminal, the contact area, the plating and the positive force.
â— DIN: A European standard for the specificity of certain connectors in the electronics industry.
â— Gauge: A number that defines the size of the wire diameter.
â— Header: A round or square plug that contains one or more rows in an insulator.
â— IC (Integrated Clrcuit) seed circuit.
IDC (Insulator Stripped Connector): A method of quickly and reliably connecting a flat cable to a connector in a large amount.
â— InserTIon force: The force required to insert a male lead into the female socket.
â— InserTIon resistance: The impedance value that the insulator between the two terminals can withstand.
â— Insulater (insulator): A very poor electrical conductor material. A dielectric material.
â— Mixroinch (micro-inch) a millionth of an inch for plating thickness.
• Package A condition in which a bulk circuit chip is connected to an external lead frame and protected from damage.
â— PlaTIng (Electroplating): A method of electrically depositing a very thin and precise thickness of metal to a substrate metal.
â— PCB (printed circuit board): also called PCBoard or Board
â— PolarizaTIon (polar) terminals and lead arrangements that prohibit unsuitable coupling of the plug and socket.
â— Resistance: The ease with which current flows through the medium. Plating: A corrosion test that is plated or hermetic with a test connector.
• Shell: The outer casing of a leaded socket, often made of an iron casing, that is precisely mechanismd to hold a terminal insert.
â— Stand off: A protruding structure at the bottom of a connector that enhances the connector's exit from the printed circuit board, aids in the form of solder fill space, board inspection and flux removal and cleaning.
â— Terminals: Round, square or other shaped metal supports for coupling connectors or PC boards.
â— Withdraw force: The force required to remove another lead from one terminal, typically at least 0.5 ounces.
â— ZIF (Zero Insertion Fore): Zero insertion force.
