Pure VLC sells its first LED-based LiFi device in the US

As the co-founder and chief scientific officer of PureVLC, the university spin-off, Professor Haas led a team to develop a new technology called LiFi. The technology wirelessly transmits data using standard light to challenge the current ubiquitous WiFi network standard.

This month, PureVLC delivered the first LiFi device since its inception to a US healthcare provider worth 5,000 euros. On October 11th, Pure VLC will also broadcast a speech by London Mayor Boris Johnson via a system that has been installed at the Bexley Business School in London.

A PureLVC model for demonstrators easily spreads a high-quality video through the beam – until Professor Haas blocked the spread of light with his body. However, the receiver has been designed to be sensitive enough to receive an indirect source, and the switching and flickering therein are not easily detectable by the naked eye.

Light-based transmission must have its own limitations. For example, Bell's ray phone has the problem of excessive reliance on sunlight - the call may be interrupted at any time due to the passing clouds - and the short receiving distance is also a deficiency.

LEDs don't depend on the weather, but LiFi-based signals cannot penetrate walls or curtains. However, some supporters believe that this has become an advantage - because no one can enter the network from the outside of the visual range. PureVLC's first customer was particularly interested in this feature, believing it would provide greater security than WiFi.

Although the LiFi network will put forward some new requirements for the infrastructure to connect lighting accessories, Professor Haas said that the LED energy-saving lamps that have been promoted on a large scale can be rationally utilized and only need to be slightly modified. Just fine.

LiFi technology enables more efficient bandwidth utilization in buildings such as offices and schools, such as each lighting offering only full-speed data transmission to the nearest person. The system is planned to be tested at the Bexley Business School with the goal of enabling each student to achieve a faster network connection rate.

PureVLC is one of many companies that want to use light sources to spread data. The company will be renamed PureLiFi starting next month.
