A few days ago, ON Semiconductor, which is constantly innovating in energy efficiency, has cooperated with Stanford International Research Institute (SRI) and Boer Aerospace Technology Company to use the investment of the third decree of the National Defense Production Act to develop a star tracking project (VSST). The complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) focal plane array (FPA) of the vision sensor. The purpose of VSST is to enhance the production capacity of the domestic advanced CMOS technology visual imager. These imagers contribute to the flexible visual imaging system on the satellite required by the US Department of Defense and other government agencies.
In order to achieve the goal of the "Enhance Linear Gaze Angle Recognition Gaze Technology" project, the above-mentioned companies will cooperate to define specifications and develop advanced 2D visual image sensors. Each member company of the STELLAR project can provide the project team with unique and complementary capabilities. ON Semiconductor can provide highly modular native 180-nanometer CMOS process technology, as well as extensive experience in designing high-performance CMOS sensors using rolling shutters and global shutters. Boer Aerospace Technology has a deep understanding of the stellar tracking system, which will help to improve the specifications of CMOS focal plane devices and the final system quality of the equipment. Stanford International Research Institute is experienced in designing focal plane arrays for space and can provide extremely advanced backside illumination (BSI) process capabilities based on ultra-thin silicon-on-insulator technology.
ONC18's CMOS manufacturing process at ON Semiconductor's 8-inch wafer manufacturing facility in Gresham, Orleans, USA is an ideal platform for developing low-power, highly integrated digital and mixed-signal application specific integrated circuits. The STELLAR project will further expand the ONC18 process to include needle photodiodes and transmission gate devices. The combination of advanced CMOS image sensor development capabilities and ON Semiconductor ’s process technology will increase the supply of CMOS image sensors.
Vince Hopkin, vice president of military and aerospace, digital, foundry and integrated product development and image sensor product divisions of ON Semiconductor, said, "The image sensor module added to our ONC18 platform has consolidated our aerospace and defense business and the entire Image sensor market. The ONC18 imaging sensor process capability will provide another source of production for the markets we serve including machine vision, high speed and biometrics. "
