January 25 news, according to foreign media reports, Intel is a chip giant, its quarterly research and development costs more than many competitors and peers a year. In the PC and server processor markets, Intel's products are the best, and its performance in these two markets is almost perfect.
But as everyone knows, Intel's performance in the mobile processor market is far worse. Intel mobile processors are usually slower to market, and even if they are on the market, Intel's mobile chips are not competitive, resulting in weak sales and difficult profitability.
It is clear that the inability to launch competitive products in the market in a timely manner has greatly reduced Intel's ability to win the design of well-known tablets and smartphones. Intel needs to make improvements in this area.
Why is timing important?
In the case of Apple, it is as regular as a clock to release a new product. In order to successfully launch new products every year, Apple component suppliers need to release products in a timely manner. Can you imagine that Broadcom can't supply Apple with a connection chip in time and affect the consequences of the new iPhone release? For Apple, this is not a good thing. For Broadcom, it is "very serious."
Not all mobile device manufacturers can release new products on a regular basis like Apple, and device vendors need to know that component suppliers can trade a sufficient number of components in a timely manner.
Intel has not shown such capabilities in the field of mobile chips.
Intel still has problems with the timely release of mobile processors. For example, taking Intel's 14nm mobile processor as an example, according to Intel's public information and product release roadmap leaked to the Internet, the 14nm process tablet processor Cherry Trail was released in the second quarter of 2014, the second generation 14 The nanotechnology tablet processor Willow Trail was released in the second quarter of 2015, and the 14nm smartphone processor Morganfield was released in the third quarter of 2015.
However, it was only at the end of 2014 that Intel began shipping the Cherry Trail. Information disclosed by Intel at the 2014 Investor Conference showed that the release time of Willow Trail/Morganfield (now known as Broxton) will be skipped to 2016.
Although the reason for the Broxton jump ticket seems to be a problem with Intel's 14-nanometer manufacturing process, I disagree with this statement. At the 2013 investor conference, Intel claimed that Broxton's production was "ready in mid-2015", when the 14-nanometer production process was exposed long ago.
Industry analysts have also given two possible reasons for Broxton, and these two reasons may be sufficient. However, the "sufficient reason" to delay the release of the chip did not help the equipment manufacturers of "waiting for the pot".
Intel needs to show better execution
In my opinion, Intel needs to introduce several generations of powerful mobile processors to demonstrate good execution. Customers in the highly competitive mobile device market need to believe that Intel can deliver competitive products in a timely and massive manner.
