According to the American technology blog Techcrunch, because Facebook wants to maintain the dream of virtual reality, the company is opening up an emerging social virtual reality platform to use headsets that the company cannot build. Today, the company's VR executives announced that Facebook Spaces will be supported and compatible with the HTC Vive Headset, an initiative that opens up a broader platform for users. Users of Oculus and HTC headsets will be able to meet in cross-platform applications where they can chat, watch videos, draw, play games and travel virtually.
Facebook has invested heavily in virtual reality under the Oculus brand, but Spaces is one of the few high-end virtual reality games with Facebook names. The F8 was announced last year, the application is still in beta, but it is open to all users who have Oculus Rift heads or HTC Vive.
Facebook Spaces still lacks support for Sony PlayStation VR. Sony recently announced that they have launched more than 2 million headsets in over a year.
