China will establish a driverless vehicle communication standard after 2018

According to foreign media reports, Fu Yuwu, executive director of the China Automotive Engineering Society, said that China will lay the foundation for the vehicle-to-vehicle communication (V2V) standard in 2018; after that, China will set a national standard, which is unmanned. The development of driving a car is crucial.

China's goal is to establish a national standard that will accelerate the deployment of driverless vehicles in the Chinese market. This is in stark contrast to the United States. In the US market, the relevant standards are spliced by a bunch of regulations, which industry sources say may hinder the development of the country's driverless automotive industry.

Earlier this year, under the guidance of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China, the China Automotive Engineering Society and major domestic automakers proposed development goals for the “13th Five-Year Plan” and the “Made in China 2025” policy. opinion.

As a result, China released a 450-page roadmap in October, setting out detailed policy objectives for almost every aspect of the automotive industry during the three-year period to 2030, including driverless cars and electric car.

However, this document fails to establish a uniform standard for vehicle-to-vehicle-to-infrastructure communication (V2I), which is critical to the success of autonomous vehicles.

In response to this, Fu Yu said that in the next road map update, China will lay the foundation for vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication standards in 2018, and then develop more specific standards between 2020 and 2025.

Fu Wu said that China's implementation of central unified planning may be more efficient than Japan and other countries, the latter has been difficult to allow the country's three major auto manufacturers to agree to the relevant standards.

"You can't basically use different communication channels, so in the end we need a unified program. This can be complicated and difficult, but it is most beneficial to the industry," Fu Yuwu told Reuters.

China hopes that by 2020, at least 7% of the cars sold will be electric or hybrid. However, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology recently announced that it will tighten subsidies for new energy vehicles. In response to this, Wu said that this will not hinder the realization of this goal.
