After nearly three years of research, LED lighting equipment product safety standards have been released.
Underwriters Laboratories (UL), an independent product safety certification body in Northbrook, Ill., has released the first edition of the ANSI / UL8750 "LED Lighting Product Safety Standard" standard for LED lighting products and The entire supply chain of components in LED-related products presents globally uniform safety requirements.
“The 8750 UL certification provides a unique safety standard for manufacturers' urgent needs to test their LED products and related components sold in the US.†Alberto, general manager of UL certified lighting business; Ujetti said .
In North America, several US-approved test laboratories (NRTLs), including UL, have the right to test and certify LED products in accordance with standards. The standard now includes UL8750.
Driven by global efficient clean energy technologies, LEDs are increasingly used in lighting products, from general lighting and pool lighting to electronic signs and holiday lights. With the development of LED technology, there are potential safety issues in high voltage and lighting as well as some new applications: including the risk of overheating, electric shock and fire.
In response to these security issues, UL hosted more than 100 summits attended by stakeholders such as manufacturers, governments, research and testing organizations to discuss the proliferation of LED technology and its future applications in lighting design and manufacturing.
With a keen insight at the summit and more than 80 years of lighting safety experience, UL has developed the current UL 8750 based on three outlines or safety regulations published in January 2007. (Compile: Looking up at the stars)
