As the General Manager of the TI Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) team, I saw the incredible evolution of this technology in providing a more comprehensive, safer, more comfortable and informative driving experience.
At TI, our System-on-Chip (SoC) ADAS product line and the complete ecosystem of analog components we offer provide scalable and open solutions, common hardware and software architectures for a variety of applications, including camera-based ( Front camera, rear camera and surround system, mirror replacement, driver monitoring) applications, as well as radar-based (blind spot warning and collision avoidance) applications and sensor fusion systems.
However, although we provide an array of systems, one thing has not changed - the driver. No matter how many new ADAS solutions we develop, human drivers are a variable that is difficult to quantify.
However, this means that major changes will be made. Whether or not it is ready, autonomous vehicles driven by a range of advanced sensor technologies and digital processing capabilities are at different stages of development.
According to research firm IHS AutomoTIve, there will be 76 million different levels of autonomous vehicles worldwide by 2035. The significance of driving so many autonomous vehicles on the road will redefine daily commuting and rewrite the expectations of our customers and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
Make autonomous work
A range of new technologies and solutions are the foundation for a successful autonomous vehicle experience. An unprecedented level of automation will require more sensors to sense the complex driving environment. Conversely, this will create a larger amount of data, processed in real time and distributed across the network for maximum reliability.
All of this must work seamlessly under extreme environmental conditions. I know very well that the future of ADAS design requires some key features to be successful.
First, size, efficiency and performance will continue to dominate the everyday driving experience, as it is now. Smaller, more efficient, and more powerful ADAS applications will become even more critical as autonomy drives the need to capture larger amounts of data. Handling all of this data to make the right decisions in real time is another obstacle, just like the barrier we pass data from sensors to processors. Of course, the solution must be financially savvy to be profitable in the luxury to entry-level automotive market.
Rethinking the role of ADAS
Perhaps one way to address these challenges is to start thinking about ADAS, not component integration. The ADAS subsystems now typically work independently of each other. For example, adaptive cruise control does not necessarily know what blind spot detection is doing.
What we need is a more comprehensive approach to ADAS where all the sensors on the car become part of a more connected aggregate to make smarter and more reliable decisions. At TI, we are creating an ecosystem of products and solutions designed to support the rapidly changing needs of today's automotive and future markets. We also work closely with our clients to lead them to an inevitable situation where autonomous vehicles will be staged in our daily lives, not impossible.
Obviously, ADAS is an exciting market space, always full of changes. However, from comfort and safety to fuel efficiency and connectivity, I think we are particularly interesting in the automotive world. This is no different than the whole concept of personal transportation is changing, I am very happy that I can participate in this exciting transformation.
