Ordinary lighting increase or make the LED market develop in the future

According to a recent US survey report, in 2012, the general lighting sector became the largest market for LED packaging worldwide for the first time – with a market value of US$3.1 billion. It is estimated that in 2012, the global market packaged LED was US$13.7 billion, excluding the sales of bare chip or module lighting products.

The report also summarizes the ranking of LED suppliers' growth/decrease rate in 2012. Samsung performed well because it increased the use of LEDs in its consumer electronics products, such as television products. Due to close cooperation with Samsung, South Korea's Lumens Co., Ltd. has also grown significantly. In the field of general lighting, Cree and Philips Lumileds are the most prominent beneficiaries.

Looking ahead, the global packaged LED market will rely on SSL as the largest driver, which is expected to increase to US$15 billion in 2017, which means that its CAGR is 1.8%. The unit price of LED chips will continue to decline.

According to reports, the replacement lamp market increased from 2.1 billion US dollars in 2011 to 2.58 billion US dollars in 2012. This increase was mainly due to the elimination of major energy generation facilities after Japan’s 2011 earthquake and tsunami. This year, LED downlights in Japan have become mainstream products, accounting for more than half of the sales of downlights.
