The SFH4780S perfectly meets the size and performance required for the built-in iris recognition function of mobile devices.
Preventing unauthorized access to mobile devices is becoming increasingly important as people access online banking, online shopping, and other sensitive applications more frequently through their phones and tablets. Currently, many manufacturers use biometric methods to identify authorized users through user fingerprints or iris feature patterns. The iris scanner illuminates the eye with infrared light and captures the iris image through the camera, then detects the iris features and compares them with the stored authorized user iris pattern. This process is only reliable enough if the contrast of the captured image is high enough, in other words, the user can be rejected or accepted accurately. As a result, designers often use multiple emitters, but this results in more space and power for the scanner. This is almost infeasible for compact battery-powered devices such as mobile phones and tablets.
Radiant intensity record-breaking IRED
OSRAM solves these challenges with high-efficiency chips, new wavelengths and high-performance packaging. The 810nm wavelength is ideal for high-contrast iris images of any color with minimal light. The high-efficiency thin-film chip is based on nano-stacking technology. Each chip contains two emission centers. When the current is 1A, the typical light output is 680mW. In pulse mode, currents up to 2A are allowed. In addition, OSRAM also uses the excellent Oslux package for visible lighting applications based on the needs of infrared LEDs. The result is a slim transmitter with a height of only 2.4 mm and a reflector and lens integrated in the transmitter with an emission angle of only 20 degrees. At a current of 1A, the typical radiant intensity of the SFH4780S is 2900mW/Sr, which exceeds all previous records for this geometry. Such outstanding emission characteristics are sufficient to ensure that as much of the emitted light as possible is shining on the eyes. OSRAM has successfully produced this IRED with its unique size/performance ratio that meets the special requirements of the built-in iris recognition function of mobile devices.
Iris scanners use infrared light to illuminate the eye and must therefore meet relevant eye safety standards. Designers can get relevant information and implementation support from the application notes.
