Facebook acquires computer vision company Zurich Eye

Oculus is currently recruiting more than 100 related development positions for US headquarters, but Oculus has more action around the world. Last week, a German media company, Handeszeitung, reported that Oculus' parent company, Facebook, had acquired a Swiss Zurich Eye company with members from the University of Zurich and another EMT Zurich University.

The Facebook representative officially confirmed that the 10-member team will officially join Oculus as a new office in Zurich. Oculus declined to comment on the acquisition, which is officially confirmed to be an open engineering office in the capital, specializing in visual computing for glasses. Zurich Eye is a vision company with 7 members in the team. The following is an introduction to the official website of the Zurich Eye: “Zurich Eye allows the machine to navigate independently in any space. Our hardware/software system provides reliable and accurate position information for the robot, allowing the robot to be open indoors, in urban areas and beyond. Space navigation.” The first page of its official website reads “Enabling Machines To See”.

Helping the robot navigate in space sounds relevant to Oculus's immediate interests. The technology provides tracking of VR helmets through a solution integrated into the device, rather than the external sensors used on the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift currently on the market. Although Oculus already has its own internal tracking solution, which has been used in the next generation of independent VR helmet Santa Cruz. Considering that the VR helmet is still in its early stages, although this is possible, Oculus is constantly optimizing its solution. If the technology of the Zurich Eye can help the robot identify the surrounding environment and understand where they are, it's not hard to see how the company's technology and Oculus fit together. Foreign media Handelszeitung said that Facebook took over the Zurich Eye project a few weeks ago.

Facebook Switzerland will also receive financial support, and its share capital has increased from 120,000 Swiss francs (about 800,000 yuan) to 2.02 million Swiss francs (about 13.84 million yuan). It is reported that they will concentrate their funds on research and development. Considering that several major visual R&D companies are currently developing their own visual products, such as Apple, Google, Oculus and HTC Vive, it is especially important to have world-class visual and positioning transmission technology. Direct acquisitions from outside may be the most immediate method in the event that a real breakthrough cannot be achieved from within the company.
