Linear Introduces Complete Power Management Solution LT

Linear Technology Corporation introduces the LTC3589, a complete power management solution for portable processors such as i.MX, PXA, ARM, OMAP and other advanced portable microprocessor systems. The device is available in a compact QFN package with eight independent power rails and dynamic control and sequencing. These power rails power the processor core, SDRAM, system memory, PC card, always-on real-time clock (RTC), and many other features. The LTC3589 contains three high current, high efficiency buck regulators, a high current/high efficiency buck-boost regulator, and four low noise, low dropout linear regulators (LDOs). Support for multi-regulators is a highly configurable power sequencing capability, dynamic voltage regulated output voltage control, a push button interface controller, regulator control via an I2C interface, and a large number of status reports and a Interrupt output.

The LTC3589's three constant frequency current mode step-down switching regulators are internally compensated for up to 1A, 1A, and 1.6A of output current with full I2C control, including selectable switching frequency (2.25MHz) Or 1.125MHz) and phasing. The device's power-up default frequency is 2.25MHz and features switch edge rate regulation designed to reduce EMI. Each buck regulator has a dynamic control and DAC-based input reference and an external feedback pin to set the nominal output voltage range. The three operating modes can be set with the I2C interface: pulse skipping (supporting 100% duty cycle), Burst Mode? operation (for optimum efficiency at low output loads), or forced continuous (maximum) Limit the output voltage ripple at light loads and optimize the dynamic transition control between voltage output set points).

The LTC3589's single inductor, synchronous buck-boost converter produces a 2.5V to 5V user-programmable output voltage rail. The buck-boost converter utilizes a proprietary switching operation algorithm that maintains high efficiency and low noise operation with input voltages above, below or equal to the regulated output rail. The buck-boost error amplifier uses a fixed 0.8V reference while the output voltage is set by an external resistor divider. The startup of burst mode operation is achieved through the I2C control register. No external compensation components are required.

The LTC3589 also has four LDOs for low-noise analog power supplies that provide three 250mA rails in different combinations of fixed, adjustable, and I2C selectable voltage options. The other LDO is a 25mA power supply with a resistor programmable output voltage and always on.

The LTC3589's general purpose I2C serial port is used to control regulator enable, output voltage value, dynamic voltage regulation and slew rate, operating mode, and status reporting. The voltage regulator initiated sequencing operation is accomplished by connecting the regulator output to the enable pin or through the I2C port in the desired order. System power-up, power-down, and reset functions are controlled by button interface, pin input, or I2C interface.

The LTC3589 is available from stock in a thermally enhanced, low profile (0.75mm) 40-pin 6mm x 6mm exposed pad QFN package. Available in 1,000-piece quantities, the E-grade version costs $4.65 each, while the I-grade version costs $5.35 each. Both versions have a working junction temperature range of -40°C to +125°CH. The operating junction temperature range is -40°C to +150°C and is also available for purchase at $5.70 each in 1,000-piece quantities.
