Just as some people like the track, others like the wilderness challenge. When the revolutionary horn of autonomous vehicles was blown, many automakers chose to follow suit quickly, but Land Rover once again chose not to take the usual path. The current autonomous driving technology is mainly for urban commuting and highways, designed to help people pass the boring time. Land Rover hopes to spend some time in the wild, so that the four-wheel drive model can get the blessing of off-road autonomous driving ability as early as possible.
Land Rover is developing autonomous vehicles that can cope with various off-road conditions.
The key to autonomous off-road technology lies in the traction of terrain and surface. Flat roads are usually not difficult, and off-road sections need to manage four wheels more dynamically—rocks, pits, wood, uneven slopes, and depth puddles—all of which must be understood.
Landex's SUV autonomous driving project Cortex hopes to generate a comprehensive topographic map to solve the above problems by means of sensor systems such as acoustics, video, radar and laser radar.
In addition to the usual access, these systems also need to work in a wider range of scenarios – soil, mud, large rocks, small rocks, and snow, rain, and fog, combined with hundreds of possible contamination or failure of sensors.
The Cortex team also received help from radar and sensor researchers from the University of Birmingham and machine learning experts from Myrtle AI. They will develop algorithms, optimize sensors, and conduct physical tests on some off-road roads in the UK.
