When doctors want to monitor brain swelling, etc., they sometimes implant a sensor that emits a readable electrical signal when stressed. The problem is that those sensors must be removed from the patient's body and require additional surgery. However, this situation may change now, and scientists have created a harmless biodegradable implantable pressure sensor.
This flexible sensor was created by a team at the University of ConnecTIcut, USA, and is made from materials certified by the US Food and Drug Administration. This material is considered safe for use in surgical sutures, bone grafts and medical implants. It is in the form of a two-layer piezoelectric L-lactide film sandwiched between molybdenum electrodes and wrapped in a polylactic acid layer. Even if a little bit of pressure is applied, a small charge is emitted. This signal can be detected by devices external to the body.
This sensor captures a wide variety of physiological stresses, including those found in the brain, behind the eyes, and on the abdomen - by changing the number of layers of the L-lactide film to adjust the sensitivity of the device. In addition, in the test on mice, only slight inflammation was implanted after the sensor was implanted, and the surrounding tissues returned to normal after 4 weeks.
Chief scientist Thanh Duc Nguyen said: "Medical sensors are usually implanted directly into soft tissues and organs. Taking them out may cause additional damage. We know that if we can develop a sensor that does not require surgery, we can take it out. Very important."
A paper on this study was recently published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
