Baidu Luqi talks about unmanned vehicles: We are not a destroyer and a car company win-win

Last week, Baidu’s president and COO Luqi said in an interview at the D.Live conference hosted by the Wall Street Journal that Baidu is building mutual benefit and win-win through open source ecosystems and partners. In the unmanned area, Baidu is not a saboteur. With the car prices are a win-win relationship. Lu Qi believes that the decisive factor in future competition in the unmanned area is the speed of software iterations. Apollo's open source ecosystem will surpass all other closed systems within three to five years.

It is reported that in April this year, Baidu officially launched the Apollo plan, which includes a complete set of software and hardware and service systems, including four parts of vehicles, hardware, software platforms and cloud data services. Open the Baidu driver-free software platform to partners, open up the code or capabilities of environmental awareness, route planning, vehicle control, vehicle operating systems, and other functions, and provide complete development and testing tools to help the entire plant integrate vehicle and hardware systems. Rapidly build a complete autopilot system.

Lu Qi said: "This is a win-win situation for both partners. Baidu will conduct business layouts in areas where algorithms and data are good at, and will not invade partners." Cooperative vendors absorb artificial intelligence, deep learning, etc. by attracting Baidu. In terms of technical advantages, "will bring better products to the market with faster update speed." With the cooperation enterprise platform, a wider range of real-world data will be collected and the speed of iterations in data, algorithms, and software development will be accelerated, which will be critical for future competition in the unmanned field.

According to some media reports, the Apollo project is a milestone in Baidu's unmanned vehicle program. Baidu is forming an ecological layout that includes a complete plant, ADAS manufacturers, sensors, and other auto parts suppliers. In July of this year, Baidu will take the lead in opening the autopilot capability of closed sites. By the end of the year, it will output the autopilot ability under the simple road conditions of the city. By 2020, Baidu will gradually open up to fully automatic driving on highways and ordinary city roads.

It is reported that this year Baidu has successively reached in-depth cooperation with industry partners such as Chery, Beijing Automotive, FAW Jiefang, Bosch Group, and Continental Group. And there are more than 60 car companies worldwide, more than 200 models and Baidu cooperation.

These partnerships aim to accelerate their own layout in the smart car sector through complementary strengths. As early as the day of the Apollo plan, Baidu signed a strategic cooperation agreement with Chery, and the two sides will jointly explore the maturity and commercialization of autonomous driving technology with the "Internet + Automotive" innovative cooperation model. In early June, Baidu also signed strategic cooperation agreements with Bosch Group, the world’s number one and second auto parts supplier, and Continental Group. The three major groups will play a competitive advantage in auto parts and internet technology for each other. Driving, car networking and smart mobile services provide comprehensive and reliable solutions. In addition, the three parties will jointly explore and practice corresponding business models to accelerate the effective transition of technology to products. At the recent CES Asia show, Baidu has also reached cooperation with four first-tier manufacturing suppliers such as Desai Xiwei, United Automotive Electronics, Hangsheng Electronics, and Botai Electronics. More detailed cooperation information will be announced in early July.

Different from Google’s strong cooperation style, Apollo’s open source platform built by Baidu will equally attract more high-quality partners and share more technical results with Baidu’s leading high-precision maps, artificial intelligence, deep learning and other fields. It will further accelerate the overall R&D process in the field of unmanned vehicles.

Lu Qi said that the open source ecosystem will be more flexible than the closed company, and it can adapt to the complex and ever-changing remote roads, which is in line with the historical natural development law. In the future, only by opening up the system and driving innovation through open source can we create truly unmanned vehicles that meet market demands.
