Beijing, China, February 2, 2010 Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) announced the availability of the industry's smallest battery gauge IC for portable consumer, commercial and industrial applications. The bq3060 converts a regular battery into a smart battery that continuously and accurately measures the battery's available power, voltage, current, temperature, and other important parameters for Li-Ion battery applications. In addition, the single-chip device provides highly reliable security features that support authentication, open circuit, and discharge protection.

In addition to maximizing functionality and security, the bq3060 dramatically reduces the cost and size of smart batteries. The device is available in a 24-pin, 7.8 mm x 6.4 mm TSSOP package with a 50% drop in size compared to high-end gas gauge solutions. The miniaturized design enables the chip to shrink the battery pack for a wide range of portable designs for applications such as portable commercial, medical, and test equipment.

The main features of bq3060:
Advanced Compensation Discharge End Voltage (CEDV) monitoring technology provides accurate gas monitoring;
Ultra low power mode (less than 69 μA) extends battery run time and save time;
SHA-1 authentication helps OEMs ensure host-to-battery compatibility for high security;
Supports a two-wire SMBus 1.1 interface with high-speed 400 kHz programming options to accelerate battery pack design and testing.
