The robot was developed by Japanese electronic equipment manufacturer Omron and named FORPHEUS. With his "unique technical intelligence and educational ability", it won the title of "the world's first robotic table tennis coach" awarded by the Guinness World Records.
With built-in visual and motion sensors, FORPHEUS tracks the trajectory of table tennis and controls the racquet shot. According to reports, its camera can track the position of table tennis 80 times per second. 
In addition to tracking table tennis, the FORPHEUS camera can also help it play the role of coach. It can display the falling point of table tennis through projection to help the opponent hit the ball. In addition, its algorithms and artificial intelligence can be used to evaluate the skill level of players to provide a training course that is more suitable for each other.
Omron said that FORPHEUS can not only teach people to play table tennis, but also make the relationship between humans and robots more harmonious. “Now is how humans teach robots to act or teach,†said Taku Oya, the project’s lead developer. “But in the next 20 years, robotics teaching and development may be entirely robot-driven.â€
