Recently, Siemens announced that it has reached an agreement with the German state of Hessen for the laying of an air contact network with a total length of 10 kilometers for the German A5 federal highway and the construction of Germany’s first electrified highway eHighway.
This time, Germany, which is deeply affected by the "emission gate", seems to be transitioning to electric vehicles.
Solve the problem of life of electric vehicles
The concept of electrified roads was proposed by Siemens in 2012.
According to the design idea, the truck is equipped with a smart pantograph, combined with a hybrid system, and the maximum acceptable truck speed is 90 km/h. When a truck is driving on an electrified road, it can be connected to the catenary through a pantograph and use electricity; when driving on a regular road, the truck can also be automatically switched to a hybrid engine.
Official website, eHighway energy efficiency is 2 times the internal combustion engine. Not only the energy consumption is halved, but also the use of electricity reduces air pollution, making it particularly suitable for ports, industrial centers and cargo hubs.
The Quartz website has cited the IDTechEx report that the system proposed by Siemens can save up to 200 billion euros over the next 30 years.

In addition, this solution can also solve the current limitations of electric vehicle transportation.
The daily mileage of freight cars is hundreds or even thousands of miles, and as the weight of goods increases, so does the energy consumption. The current battery technology cannot support the long-term driving of freight cars, such as Tesla ModelX models with a maximum range of 295 miles.
Transformation is the trend
The construction of electrified highways also reflects the changes made by European countries after the signing of the Paris Agreement.
Earlier in Germany, Siemens had announced the construction of electrified highways in Sweden and the United States.
In August 2014, Siemens announced an electrified highway program in the United States. In 2015, Siemens partnered with truck manufacturer Scania to announce the construction of the first electrified highway in Europe. Sweden stated that it is hoped that in 2030 the transportation industry will no longer rely on fossil fuels.
In addition, this summer, France, Britain, and Germany have also said they will ban the sale of gasoline cars and diesel cars.
In June, France took the lead in announcing that it would be forbidden to sell these two types of cars by 2040 to promote the Paris Agreement. A month later, the British government made the same decision.
The German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who was still defending diesel vehicles, has finally changed his attitude. On August 16th, she stated for the first time after the “emission gate†scandal that it will promote the transformation of German automobile manufacturers into electric vehicles and achieve the goal of 1 million electric vehicles on the road by 2020.
