BMW's fifth-generation electric powertrain technology revealed

According to foreign media reports, BMW is working on the fifth-generation electric powertrain technology. For this reason, BMW invited many reporters from the United States and Canada to its Munich plant to learn about the new electrification technology up close. The BMW iX3 model will be the first new BMW model equipped with the new powertrain system. This electric SUV will be equipped with a 70 kWh battery pack.

The company seems to be testing the battery packs of BMW iX3 and iNext models. The new battery modules will consist of lithium-ion prismatic batteries. BMW hopes to strengthen cooperation with battery manufacturers to gain expertise in battery manufacturing and battery chemical formulations. The company also hopes to make a compact power system.

BMW's fifth-generation electric powertrain technology will be carried on the company's first long-distance electric vehicle. The system is more integrated, the power transmission system and battery pack are more compact, and the energy capacity is larger.

Today, the 33 kWh on-board battery in the BMW i3 model is the company's largest battery pack, and the new technology has more than doubled its energy capacity.

The BMW iX3 model will be the first new BMW model equipped with the new powertrain system. This electric SUV will be equipped with a 70 kWh battery pack. BMW showed off a platform that resembles a skateboard shape, which has almost become standard equipment for its large battery packs in the past few years. The company seems to be testing the battery packs of BMW iX3 and iNext models. The new battery modules will consist of lithium-ion prismatic batteries.

BMW engineers explained the reason: when it comes to battery cooling and manufacturing issues, they considered cylindrical batteries and polymer batteries (pouch cells), but found that prismatic cells (prismatic cells) can get many benefits after building battery modules. .

BMW used Samsung 94 Ah prismatic batteries for the i3 model, and its plug-in hybrid vehicles also use this type of battery. Although BMW still insists on using prismatic batteries, it is currently experimenting with different sizes and chemical compositions.

Up to now, BMW still insists on using lithium-nickel-manganese-cobalt-oxide (NMC) battery formula. The company is concerned about the supply of cobalt metal and will reduce the cobalt content in battery cells in the future. .

The company predicts that the energy density of its batteries will increase by about 5% annually in the next ten years. Although BMW purchases car batteries from suppliers such as Samsung, the company is still conducting research and development tests on its own battery samples at its Munich base. BMW’s sample production line can provide the company with nearly 1,000 battery cells each year, which is enough to make several battery samples.

Company executive Juraschek said that BMW hopes to strengthen cooperation with battery manufacturers to gain expertise in battery manufacturing and battery chemical formulations. BMW executives have repeatedly emphasized that battery cells are an important part of its electrification transformation. When asked whether BMW wants to make its own batteries, Juraschek said that this topic is too big, and it is not convenient to disclose details at the moment, and he does not want the supplier to feel anxious because of this.

â–¼Motor and power transmission system

BMW is phasing out permanent magnet motors (permanent magnet motors), and instead puts the electric motor in the power transmission, aiming to create a compact power system. The electric transmission shown on site is a 200 kW system. According to Juraschek, the compact device has a peak output of 250 kW.

BMW claims that its electric motors have also carried out several technological innovations, including: a more compact design and easier production of the coil system. In addition, BMW also plans to use this power transmission device in different power systems. Both plug-in hybrid models and pure electric models will use this system, including: single-motor version and dual-motor version.
