Summarize five macro trends in technology that will have the greatest impact on business and society in 2018

One of the benefits of being the President and CEO of Analog Devices is to be able to travel around the world and meet customers from all walks of life in different regions to hear their views on the technology, business and market challenges they face. Our customers produce a wide range of electronic devices that influence our modern life in transportation, healthcare, communications and more. Our discussion tends to focus on how to bridge the gap between reality and the digital world and explore the innovations they hope to achieve in the future. Based on these conversations and other research, I have summarized the following five macro trends in technology that will have the greatest impact on business and society in 2018.

Summarize five macro trends in technology that will have the greatest impact on business and society in 2018

01

artificial intelligence

Just as people worked hard to achieve digital advantages ten years ago, customers in each market segment are eagerly trying to understand the value of artificial intelligence and machine learning for their business. With the continual elimination of obstacles such as performance/economic affordability, and the fact that some AI specific applications have gradually produced benefits and application-level effects in industrial environments, the focus on AI applications will accelerate in 2018. For example, AI has evolved into a stage where industrial robots can learn and adapt to new or unfamiliar objects without special training.

Through innovations in low-power signal processing, AI at the edge node will begin to shift from novelty to conventional technology, while contextual context data and information push smarter system partitions between edges and clouds, making smart edges Calculation becomes a reality.

At the same time, AI applications that compete with human intelligence will continue to be dominated by university research.

02

Autonomous/smart machine

In 2018, the autonomous systems of cars, drones and robots will continue to develop, but will be limited by some regulatory and technical issues to be resolved. However, in the next few months, some project plans with autonomous systems will continue to show us progress, such as the pilot deployment of driverless taxis in limited areas. Long-distance transportation, especially trucks and trains, will be one of the applications that have made substantial progress in unmanned driving in the near future.

Driven by the constant pursuit of productivity benefits, adding a smart drive to the machine will also accelerate the plant automation/industrial 4.0 process. For example, advances in machine learning will significantly increase the capabilities of the system to provide valuable performance recommendations and forecasts based on their own independent state monitoring.

03

Ubiquitous wireless sensor networks and data

The combination of advanced materials, enhanced features and MEMS enables breakthroughs in sensor size and cost, making wireless sensor networks ubiquitous. By deploying wireless mesh networks in IoT and industrial applications, sensing capabilities can be added to existing systems without extensive rewiring. However, end-to-end security from sensors to the cloud will become a basic requirement for industrial users to deploy industrial IoT on a large scale.

The drive to make products and systems smarter will also increase the need to manage and analyze the growing data flow. As data loads continue to increase, data centers will need higher processing performance and advanced power management innovations to mitigate the risks of high temperatures in data center systems. We will also gradually see that edge nodes integrate more intelligence to begin categorizing and processing data streams.

04

HMI

As augmented reality and virtual reality ecosystems thrive and inspire more innovation, mixed reality systems will continue to emerge and become popular. As the application of commercial AR/VR systems accelerates, the cost will decrease and the scope of application will extend to off-site diagnosis and maintenance in areas such as industry.

In addition, voice user interaction has been expected, but this technology still faces some limitations, especially in noisy environments. Gartner predicts that 30% of technology interactions with technology will be achieved through dialogue with smart machines in 2018, which means that technology and service providers now need to invest to improve today's limited voice interaction.

05

Heterogeneous manufacturing

As the development costs of deep submicron technology soar and Moore's Law faces increasingly severe technical and cost challenges, heterogeneous integration of multiple technologies in a single package, a single layer laminate, or even a single silicon substrate will increase. New business models that promote the capitalization of heterogeneous manufacturing will emerge, enabling small-scale semiconductor manufacturers that are unable to invest in the most advanced IC lithography technology to achieve restructuring and innovation. For suppliers with a wider range and larger scale, integrating signal processing algorithms onto the chip will help to increase the value of their solutions.

in conclusion

How will these trends evolve in the coming year? As the saying goes, the best way to predict the future is to create the future. While semiconductor innovation will be the foundation for these emerging applications, and as analog technology becomes more important in the “data-hungry” world, Analog Devices will unremittingly make these predictions a reality in 2018.
