The 50% joint venture of the two companies will work to integrate the expertise of the Continental Group and the OSRAM Group in the areas of lighting, light control and electronics.
The purpose of the joint venture is to bring products and solutions that are optimized, coordinated and innovative to the market more quickly through joint development. It is worth mentioning that the future joint venture company will operate in the market as an independent company.
According to Gaogong LED observation, as early as November 6, 2017, the two technology companies Continental and Osram announced plans to establish a joint venture. The program aims to combine innovative lighting technologies with electronics and software technologies to develop, produce and market intelligent lighting solutions for the automotive industry. The globally operating joint venture to be established will be named Osram Continental GmbH and will be based in the Munich area.
It is reported that the joint venture is expected to have about 1,500 employees and 17 locations around the world, with annual sales of hundreds of millions of euros. After the two parties reached an agreement on the relevant legal contracts, obtained approval from their respective supervisory committees, and passed anti-monopoly approval, the joint venture company plans to start operations in the second half of 2018.
At that time, OSRAM will transfer the automotive solid-state lighting (SSL) business module to the joint venture. The Continental Group will transfer the lighting control business of the body and safety business unit to the joint venture. As a result, the future joint venture Osram Continental will have semiconductor-based lighting modules, advanced electronics, optics and software technologies, combined with sensor technology and innovative light sources to deliver a rich, end-to-end, dedicated front vehicle. A portfolio of designed, innovative lighting solutions is used on the lights and taillights.
